Volker Musahl, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon board certified in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine. He is the medical director of the UPMC Rooney Sports Medicine Complex, program director of the sports medicine fellowship program, and a professor of both bioengineering and orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. After receiving his medical degree from Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany, Dr. Musahl completed his residency at UPMC, followed by a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. A world-renowned sports surgeon, he has performed knee and shoulder surgery on many international professional football players and specializes in comprehensive care for patients of all ages with injuries to the knee, shoulder, and elbow. His research interests include bioengineering of the knee and shoulder, and he serves as assistant editor-in-chief for KSSTA and is recognized on the Best Doctors List in Pittsburgh Magazine. Dr. Musahl also serves as co-head team physician for the Pitt Varsity Football Team and co-director of the Orthopaedic Robotics Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. A multi-sport athlete himself, he has competed in duathlon world championships for the U.S. national team.
